My Best Fiend - Klaus Kinski

Great movie. Highly recommended. {netflix}

Fave bits: footage of them trying drag the boat up the mountain... the scene at the end of Aguirre with all the monkey-rats... the part where the Indians offer to kill Kinski... the part where Herzog's drives to Kinski's house in order to firebomb it... "this was prevented only by the vigilance of his German shepherd"... interviews w/ Kinski's beautiful ex-paramours (clearly there was another a side of the man not seen here) ... Herzog's tirade against the "decaying obscenity" of nature... "she was a hunchbacked dwarf with 9 children and 148 guinea pigs"... Mick Jagger?!... the unexpectedly beautiful ending...

Herzog was really cute back in those days. This skinny German dude with a big mustache and curly hair, deep in the jungles, completely intense. I like that he has a sense of humor about himself. He's aged well.

It's funny, I have no desire to see any of Herzog's ponderous artsy movies (Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Woyzeck) but the story of how those movies were made is really interesting. Herzog's such a fascinating character. I've been intrigued by him ever since seeing Grizzly Man. Then there was that New Yorker profile where he got hit by a stray bullet, right in the middle of an interview! The man's a strange attractor.
