Cold chillin' [23 Mar 2006|10:03am]
Yesterday at book club, we made liquid nitrogen ice cream. I can't believe I finally got to cross this off my todo list.

Recipe:

1 quart heavy whipping cream
2 cups whole milk
1.5 cups sugar
2 tablespoons vanilla
1 friend who has access to liquid nitrogen (preferrably T.J.)

Get your friend to come over with 5 liters of liquid nitrogen in an ice chest. Mix all the ingredients together in a big steel bowl. Optionally, crumble in some candy (we used Butterfingers). Then, using a steel cup, slowly scoop liquid nitrogen out of the chest and pour it into the bowl, stirring slowly and steadily the whole time. Continue till the ice cream has achieved a good consistency. Makes 1 quart.

I was expecting it to have a weird texture, ice chips or something, but it tasted like really good Breyer's ice cream! I highly recommend trying this.

The book club book was Making Beats: The Art of Sample Based Hip-Hop, by Joseph Schloss. In attendence were Hong, Mattorb, Cosmo, Jay, Brad, Az., Jenny, T.J. and me. Most of us found the book too academic, but it lead to some good discussion. One interesting tidbit-- apparently RZA is infamous amongst hip hop DJs for not "quantizing" his beats, which makes it hard to mix his songs into other songs. "If they don't know, they'll think think YOU'RE off beat," complained one DJ. Oh please! RZA came to bring the muthafuckin ruckus! What did you expect?
