(why am i telling you all this? does anybody care? i do, i suppose, as i am busy constructing reality.) i accidentally left a lovely pair of pajama pants at the bar, but maybe angi saved the day? looking forward to a fabulous sleep sensation.

Does the New Yorker use fancy words just for the sake of it? J'accuse!!!

On at least four occasions, I've looked up some obscure New Yorker word and found it to be an exact synonym of some other, more common word.

New Yorker word

Ordinary word that means the same thing

I know there are no true synonyms, but I can't understand the distinction between the obscure word and common word in any of these cases. Why would you choose to use one versus the other? What's the difference?

Letter to Senator Nelson (D-Nebraska, pop: 1,783,432)

Dear Senator Nelson,

It disappoints me greatly that you are obstructing the pending health care bill in an effort to reduce reproductive freedom for women.

Many people in Nebraska and elsewhere in the US have no access to health care. The pending bill will finally address this injustice, as well as the myriad other well known problems with the U.S. health care system (such as spiraling costs and ineffective allocation of resources.) We've waited for so long, and change is finally at hand. Please don't stand in the way of progress.

If you continue to obstruct passage of this bill, or you manage to tack on provisions that effectively deny poor women the right to choose, I give you my word that I will contribute at least $500 to your opponent in 2012. I don't mean this as a threat, just an indication of how important this is to me.

thank you for your time

Amar Pai

One thing I realized about my Netflix reviews-- they all assume that you're watching the movie in its original language for audio. I hate dubbed dialog. Conversely, I watch all movies with subtitles on. English ones too.

I gave Joint Security Area 5 stars but it would be less for the dubbed version, which I guess some people would watch by default.

I love South Korean movies. They're always 5 genres at once. Comedy-monster-movie or mystery-war-movie. It's way more interesting than most Hollywood tripe. (Or most Iranian art-house flicks or "tasteful New Yorker world cinema" or whatever)

Basically, South Korea owns cinema at the moment
